Carlos Slim Helu (and family)
If you’re not from Latin America, you might’ve never heard about Carlos Slim Helu before. He was born in 1940 in Mexico City and amassed much of his fortune during the 1990s by acquiring several telecommunications companies. However, he’s a controversial figure.
His not-so-great reputation is due mainly to the nature of the deal he cut to buy Telmex, Mexico’s public telephone company, when it was privatized. It’s said that the country’s then-president Carlos Salinas de Gortari sold shares to Slim Helu at a lower price.
